A Pelton Home Base

Right where you live.

Pelton might be small, but you don't need to drive into Chester-le-Street, Stanley or Newcastle to find a good used car. We're right here in the village.

Greencroft Motor Company Ltd is a small, independent used car sales business run from a home base by Manj Bassi and Kevin Wilson. Between us we've spent years in the trade — and we set this place up to do it the way it should be done.

A Buyer's Guide To Pelton

Buying a used car in Pelton — what we'd want you to know.

Pelton sits on the western edge of Chester-le-Street, tucked between the A1(M) and the old colliery villages of Stanley, Craghead and South Moor. It's a working-class corner of County Durham — full of families, nurses commuting to Durham and Newcastle, tradespeople running vans across the North East, and retirees who just want a comfortable, dependable runaround. The cars people actually need here aren't the cars you tend to find at the big-city sellers. That's why we set up where we did.

When we were planning Greencroft Motor Company, we sat down and asked ourselves: what does a Pelton driver actually want from a used car dealer? The honest answer was — not very much, but the basics done well. A car that starts every morning. A clear price with no surprises. A warranty that means something. Someone you can ring back if something goes wrong. None of that is glamorous, but all of it is rare. So that's what we built.

The cars that suit Pelton driving

Most of our local trips are short ones — school runs to Pelton Roseberry or Pelton Lane Ends, the supermarket at Chester-le-Street, the doctors at the village surgery, the A1(M) commute into Newcastle or down to Durham. Short, cold, stop-start journeys are the worst conditions for a diesel engine, especially anything with a DPF. We tend to lean towards small-to-medium petrol cars and well-looked-after hybrids for that reason — cars that actually like the way you'll drive them.

If you're towing a caravan or running a small business, that changes things, and we'll happily source something more suitable. But for the average Pelton family doing 8,000–12,000 miles a year, a tidy 1.0–1.6 petrol with a verified service history is almost always the right answer. We won't try to push you into a 2.0 diesel just because we've got one in stock.

How we prepare every car

Every car that goes out of Greencroft has been through a full mechanical inspection, a fresh MOT where one is due within six months, an oil and filter service, a brake check, tyre check, and a thorough cosmetic prep. We also run an HPI check on everything we buy — no outstanding finance, no recorded write-offs, no mileage discrepancies. It's not a marketing claim, it's just what we do. If a car doesn't pass our prep, we don't sell it.

Each car comes with six months of Autoguard Premium warranty as standard. If you'd like to extend that to a full one, two or three years, you can do so at point of sale. The cover is properly underwritten by Autoguard rather than self-administered, which means claims are dealt with on their merits, not at our convenience. We're not trying to make a margin out of the warranty — we just want the car to outlast it.

What you'll find at 35 Aspen Drive

Our stock list isn't huge, and that's deliberate. We'd rather hand-pick eight or ten genuinely good cars than line up forty average ones. When you arrive at 35 Aspen Drive, one of us — Kevin or Manj — will be there. There's no sales floor, no lanyards, no commission targets. Have a wander, take a seat, ask whatever you want to ask. Test drives are encouraged, not negotiated.

If we don't have what you're after, tell us. Between us we've got the trade contacts to source most things within a week or two, and we'll only do it if the numbers work for you. We'd rather lose a sale than push you into the wrong car — we're going to keep bumping into you in the village either way.

Part-exchanges in Pelton

Most Pelton families have a car already, and most of those cars have been worked hard. We'll happily take almost anything in part-exchange — it doesn't have to be young, it doesn't have to be tidy, and it certainly doesn't have to be one of ours. We've taken in old Corsas, faithful Fiestas, retired Mondeos, well-loved Qashqais, even the odd diesel Berlingo from a self-employed local tradesman who's ready to switch to something with a bit more comfort. Whatever you've got, send us a few photos and the V5 details, and Manj will come back to you with a number. If you'd rather sell outright instead of part-exchanging, just say so — we'll quote you separately for that.

We try to be honest about what your car is actually worth at trade. Online valuation tools tend to flatter cars massively for an obvious reason — they're trying to get you to click through to a buyer who'll then quietly slash the figure once they have hands on the car. We don't play that game. The figure we give you on WhatsApp is the figure you'll get when you arrive at Aspen Drive, assuming the car is as described. No surprises, no last-minute "oh, we've spotted a problem" reductions.

Why family-run still matters

Pelton is, fundamentally, a village. People know each other. The barber knows your dad, the corner shop knows your kids, and somebody at every wedding has worked with somebody at every funeral. In that kind of place, a small car seller cannot afford to mess people about — the reputational cost is enormous, and far higher than any short-term margin we could squeeze out by being slippery on a deal. We've structured the business that way deliberately. Greencroft Motor Company is just Kevin and Manj, two names on the door, two phone numbers, two faces you'll see again at the supermarket.

That has practical consequences for the buyer. If you've got a question about a car a week after you've collected it, you ring us and we answer. If something needs sorting under the warranty, we walk you through it personally. There's no escalation queue, no manager who's "out today", no team meeting deciding whether your concern is valid. There is just us — and that's how we like it.
