Right on your doorstep.
Chester-le-Street drivers have plenty of options when it comes to buying a used car — the trouble is, “plenty of options” is exactly the problem.
From the franchised showrooms on the A1 corridor to the back-street independents that come and go, it's easy to feel like every seller has the same script and the same flavour of small-print warranty.
Greencroft Motor Company is the alternative. We're a small, family-run used car sales business based at 35 Aspen Drive, Pelton — about two minutes' drive from Chester-le-Street town centre, just past the Pelton Fell turn. Our entire stock is hand-picked by our two directors, Manj Bassi and Kevin Wilson.
Every car we sell goes through a full mechanical and cosmetic check before we ever list it, and every car comes with 6 months of Autoguard Premium warranty as standard. If you'd like longer cover, you can extend up to 36 months at point of sale.

Choosing a used car in Chester-le-Street — the honest version.
Chester-le-Street is one of those towns that punches above its weight. Sandwiched between Durham and Newcastle, with the A1(M) running straight through it, it's one of the best-connected commuter towns in the North East. That convenience comes with a particular driving life — daily motorway miles, regular trips into the city for work or shopping, school runs across town, and weekend escapes up to Beamish or out to the Durham Dales. The right used car for a Chester-le-Street driver isn't the same as the right used car for someone who never leaves their village.
We're a five-minute drive from Chester-le-Street town centre, just up the road in Pelton. That makes us a genuinely local option — closer than driving over to MotorPoint or chasing supermarket adverts in Sunderland or Gateshead. And because we're local, we can't really afford to mess anyone about. Word travels fast in a town this size.
Motorway miles vs. town miles
If your job means you sit on the A1(M) twice a day, your priorities are different. Modern petrol turbos, well-maintained hybrids, and clean low-mileage diesels all work well on a motorway commute — but each one asks something different of the buyer. A diesel needs regular long runs to keep its emissions system happy, which a Chester-le-Street commuter often does naturally. A hybrid will give you genuinely impressive fuel figures around town and reasonable ones on the motorway. A small petrol turbo is the simplest option of the three, and the cheapest to insure and tax.
When you're looking at our stock, ask us about the previous owner's typical use — we know the back-stories of every car we've bought, and a car that's spent its life on motorways will look almost new mechanically even at 80,000 miles. A car that's done the same mileage purely on short urban hops will be much more tired. Mileage on the dashboard isn't the whole picture.
The "supermarket" trap
It's tempting to drive over to the big national car supermarkets at Birtley or Gateshead. The lots are huge, the prices look sharp, and you can park up with a coffee and browse 200 cars in an afternoon. The catch is that almost everything you'd want from a small independent — a known history, someone who's actually driven the car, a real conversation about its quirks — isn't really on offer. The price you see is the price they need to advertise; the warranty is a bolt-on; the after-sales service is a call centre.
We're not knocking the supermarkets — for some buyers they're exactly the right answer. But if you'd rather buy from someone who can tell you on which roads the car was driven, what tyres it's wearing and why, and who'll pick up the phone when you ring nine months later about a curious noise — that's the gap we're trying to fill in Chester-le-Street.
What we include as standard
Every car at Greencroft is delivered with six months of Autoguard Premium warranty cover, an HPI clear check, a full mechanical and cosmetic prep, a fresh MOT where one is due within six months, and an honest description of every known fault. If a stone-chip is on the bonnet, we'll point it out. If a tyre's got 4mm left, we'll tell you. We'd rather you know everything before you buy than feel ambushed three weeks in.
If six months of warranty isn't enough for you, we can extend it up to three years through Autoguard at point of sale. The cover is properly underwritten by Autoguard rather than self-administered, which is the reason it actually pays out when claims arise — we're not the ones holding the cheque book, so we have no incentive to delay or deny.
